Carnoustie Rugby Club

Event Type:

Outdoor Event

3,500 people

When Johnny Christie from Carnoustie Rugby Club first mentioned their idea to hold a Beach Rugby event I was really excited. A few teams, a few spectators, a bit of rugby. It sounded fun. I had no idea it would turn into such a massive event.

All credit to Johnny and his team. I was expecting a couple of hundred people, but in the end over 3,500 people came along to make it a truly memorable day.

It was the perfect way for Carnoustie Rugby Club to celebrate their 40th anniversary. They wanted to do something different to mark the milestone. But it wasn’t just about the club, it was also about giving the town something different to enjoy on a summer’s day.

The Event – more than just rugby

The showcase of the event was naturally the 5-a-side beach rugby which featured 20 teams. Although it was the centrepiece it was by far the only thing going on. There was a classic car show, live music from three different bands as well as a very popular farmers market. And, of course, if you’re vaguely familiar with the sport of rugby, you’ll know that the social aspect is huge. “Social aspect”, in case you’re wondering, is just code for ‘drink’ – and that’s where we came in.

Johnny and the Carnoustie Rugby Club team asked us to provide two pay bars throughout the day. One bar had draught beer, wine and spirits and the other was set up as a Gin and Prosecco bar. We ran three Gin tastings sessions over the course of the day that featured five Scottish Gins.

The feedback from everyone was so positive and despite the large crowds, I was proud of how quickly the team worked to keep the queues low. We had a lot to contend with. It was windy and as a result, the marquee had to be removed. That meant drinks were initially blown over but the team adapted, kept upbeat and dealt with everything that was thrown at them. More importantly for me, they did it with a smile.

This was one of our biggest events and we loved it. The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone seemed to have a great time. Thanks to everyone who came along and to Carnoustie Rugby Club for arranging such a wonderful event for the town.

The Bespoke Bar Company played a big part in our special day. The bar was busy all day and the feedback from everyone was really positive. The staff were great fun and their flexibility throughout the day was really appreciated. The Gin Tasting sessions were especially successful. The format and, of course, the Gin, went down very well. If you’re planning an event of any scale, and need a bar service, we’d recommend The Bespoke Bar Company.
